Built for independent practices, for over 35 years.
Criterions Software has been building EHR and practice management software since 1991, for one kind of customer: the independent medical practice. Not hospital systems that we also sell to smaller offices — independent practices, from single-provider offices to twenty-five-provider groups, and the billing companies that serve them.
Thirty-five years is long enough to have watched this category consolidate. Most of the companies that were serving independent practices when we started were acquired, rolled up, or repositioned toward enterprise, and the practices they left behind were handed a product built for someone considerably larger. We stayed where we started.
What 35 years actually buys you
Not nostalgia — institutional memory. Our team includes people who have supported the same practices for twenty, thirty, and forty years, which means the person you reach understands what your practice was doing before your current workflow existed, and usually why.
It also means we've migrated practices off paper, off systems that were sunset by their vendors, and off platforms that were acquired out from under them. None of that is theoretical here.
Who we build for
Independent and physician-owned ambulatory practices with one to twenty-five providers, across 24 specialties — and the medical billing companies that handle claims on their behalf. Those are two genuinely different buyers with different needs, which is why the products are licensed separately.
We are not built for hospital systems, health networks, or community health centers. That isn't modesty — a product that serves everyone serves the one-to-twenty-five-provider practice worse, and that practice is who we answer to.
How we're built
Criterions is modular. You license the EHR, practice management, or both, and attach only the features you use. There is no tier you buy and grow into, and no bundle that includes a clinical chart for a billing company that will never open one.
We are cloud-based, so there is no server in your closet. We are ONC Health IT certified. We sign a Business Associate Agreement with every customer. And support is available 24 hours a day — the team knows customers by name, most replies come back within one to two hours, and that combination is the part customers mention first and the part that is hardest to explain on a website.

Thirty-five years is the answer to a question you're too polite to ask
Which is: will you still be here in five years, and will the people who know my practice still be here with you? It's the right question to ask a software vendor you're about to build a decade of patient records inside of, and most of this category cannot answer it well.
We were here in 1991, we're independent, and over 250 practices and billing companies run on us today. The people who support them have been doing it for decades.
